Unit 3 Overview

Updated: Mar 15, 2020

During Unit 3 we are exploring topics related to how the choices of individuals can transform the world around us for the positive.

Reading Strategy Focus: CLOSE Readings

Students will learn how to use this strategy to help them increase their comprehension of texts. It is important for them to understand that sometimes reading (or skimming) one time is not enough.

CommonLit

Our first week back from break we set up CommonLit accounts. Our first set of readings were assigned to assess how students are applying CLOSE reading strategies to comprehend text sets related to our Unit 3 theme. The readings are very similar to the types they will encounter on the Milestones so the purpose of using this as a class resource is to increase their stamina; comprehension of question types; and how to unpack constructed responses related to their readings.

I require all students to take a second look if their score is below 70. If students are still unable to make progress they may request to have the assignment opened again. Although the assignments can be accessed from home, we will use CommonLit for classwork assignments. If your student would like to finish up work at home that is AWESOME and ok with me.

Reading PLUS (Homework)

Reading Plus scores are averaged Bi-weekly to count as a formative grade. When possible, I allow students some class time to work on their readings. As always, if there is limited technology available at home I will work with individual students to make a plan.

For the month of January, students are competing to win one of three $25 Amazon gift cards! I will be checking the number of words read between January 1st and 31st.

Please encourage your student to login from home. Based on our work last week, we calculated all assignments can be completed if students work 10-15 minutes daily for 4-5 days. Math in reading class! It's important for goal setting :)
